Let me share a philosophical question

(As many, I bought this lens (Super-Tak 105/2.8) after Mike's fine captures. It came yesterday, and this is one of the first shots, wide open...)

Looks good wide open Rense!
I hate to post a photo in another's thread, the Mods usually come after you, but I feel it is necessary here in order to answer your question. I think they do it to scare the hell out of us?

It's all relative to the item casting the shadow. Sometimes, shadows are more beautiful than the real thing. Think in terms of absolutes. A flower is always very beautiful, so a shadow has to be uglier. On the otherhand, take something that is absolutely ugly, and a shadow will likely be an improvement!

You're welcome...

I often use that thought process when shooting items that might be silhouetted. If the detail is distracting or ugly, i'll often aim for a silhouette (via PP, composition, etc). Of course a shadow isn't quite the same, but it does go back to the details.

While Spiders can be cool in terms of details, some of us find them disturbing. The shadow photo above, though is awesome.

The question has but one answer: "Only the Shadow Knows."

In the one above, we know the shadow of the spider tells us he's there, but not exactly where, he could be right over our heads about to drop on us,"
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

In the first one, roses aren't very scary....
