Crystal Mountain

Actually it is a macro of smoky quartz crystal I thought I would photograph. Not many flowers or bugs at this campground, so I thought I would present something a bit different.

Minerals! I like bugs and flowers, but minerals, rocks, and geologic formations are close to my heart as a former field geologist. It seems as if these subjects are not often photographed. Anyway, you captured the colors and striations of the quartz nicely. Are these in a sample case or shot in the wild?

thanks so much Tamia for taking a look and commenting. This is from my rock/mineral collection of about 250 samples that I have and started when I was about 8 years old. We removed the collection from our storage shed and taking it to a grandson who is also interested in collecting. Funny that I collected these over the years but just the last couple of years have taken up the study of geology due to the areas we visit.

That's the way I wanted to show Susan, sort of low looking up into the formations.

Lucky grandson, Bob. As for studying geology, have you read John McPhee's geo series, Annals of the Former World? A collection of four books about the geology of the US written for laymen. He talks about many of your stomping grounds, as I recall.

Great job Bob, taking photos of Crystals is like trying to take a flash photo of yourself in a mirror, really great control of light. Thanks for sharing

Tamia, thanks so much for the link, I'll take a look on Amazon to see about ordering. Not too old to learn for me.
