I have struggled to get any kind of a quality shot of our aquarium contents and come no where near this imagery. Very nice.
Would you be so kind as to share your technique?

That's very good. Like Clarence I've tried these shots and for me, failed miserably. Well done and great colours/sharpness.

i wish it was an easy answer, but it really depends on the light source and the lens. that's a metal halide light fixture and da* 16-50 with hood at 50mm (exif).

generally, it's not that different from shooting hockey

keep the shutter at atleast 1/200, center weight or pattern meter; depending on the light and effect you want. if you were to shoot with the fa50 and the same type of light i'd under expose a stop; like this.

i'd recommend taking a lot of shots with a sliding scale of exposure to find what combo works best for what you own, and make a mental note for how that glass performs. once you know how the glass performs, manual mode is great to work with to make things a little more dramatic. aperture priority is perfect for the trial period. bright point source light is not quite the same as the sun.

as for the camera setup itself. shot raw; no sharpening. no sharpening on the raw processing, only a very slight kelvin correction (da* glass is phenominal!). using the pentax profile in acr4. once in photoshop cs3, a crop to 5x7 ratio, resized. very very slight level correction 'cause the glass did a great job.

then a smart sharpen of .3 @ 130%. <--- this will get you all that detail that was recorded, as long as you don't sharpen until the final step.

noise reduction is turned off in body so i get full resolution.

Great shot! I especially like the simple three main colour combination; orange-brown, blue and green. Gives a nice and relaxed mood that suites so well with the subject. Did you purposely arranged that background?
