The spruce bog trail - walk
Lens: Sigma 70 macro, A 400 XS-40 Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Algonquin Park, Ontario,Canada
Posted By: normhead, 03-12-2013, 09:14 AM

These are from the last time the sun was out....now we've got clouds and rain and we feel grounded.. \
The spruce bog, for which the hiking trail is named. Taken with the K-01 and 40 XS

We saw these guys on the way, but I didn't get any new pictures of them... ho hum, just another Gray Jay.

Spruce grouse habitat... we didn't see any Spruce Grouse (K-01 and 40 XS)

The A-400mm was on the K-5 in case I saw spruce grouse, so I used it for a few mood shots...

Then I put the 70 macro on the K-5 for a few close ups

Once the 70 gets on the camera, it often doesn't come off. 70 is the new 105..

The last view of the bog with the board walk, that actually lets you walk in the bog without getting your feet wet. (K-01 40 XS)

Heading back to the parking lot.

Thanks for letting me come along while sitting here in my shorts and trying not to sweat on my computer. Nice series Norm. That 70 really produces some lovely shots.

Thanks Susan
I don't mean to brag, but in 3 months I'll be sitting around in my shorts sweating too...

A very nice series. You and the K01 produce some great work. I have the sig 70 and really don't use it enough to justify me having it. You are doing it justice. But my favorite is the lone dried flower stalk with the bokeh of the others. That is fantastic!

Thanks for commenting Dice.... the K-01 is like a point and shoot, only better. I wouldn't have paid what they originally asked for it, but as of now, it's a great deal, and I really enjoy having it along as a second body. That 70 macro is an amazing lens. We were comparing my shots to T's with the Tamron 90, I don't think I'm giving up anything using the 70.

Thanks sailor, I always feel like I'm taking you guys along with me, and try to get a few shots to give context.

It was nice to see your series on the Spruce Bog Trail. I've done that walk many times too, usually trying to track down a bird from a prior sighting, black-backed woodpecker comes to mind. Every time I go though, all I see is the good old Spruce Bog in spite of lugging the big lens around hoping for a catch! Thanks for sharing.

That is probably the thing people understand least about the park. Yes lots of animals live there, but they are pretty wild and don't necessarily want to be in your presence. You still have to be lucky to get a lot of images. I've yet to see a spruce grouse, which is the habitat the bog is said to host, and I've been there 4 times in the last month. You you go through with the park naturalist he shows you where they've been but as a photographer, you don't really care where they've been, unless they are coming back... like in the next 15 minutes. I did talk to a photographer who recently got an image of that black backed woodpecker. He was there. I guess just not for you, or me.
