Balancing mixed lighting (4 images)
Posted By: hamidlmt, 03-01-2008, 09:42 PM

I was playing around tonight with a couple different light sources... mixing tungsten continuous light with flash.

These are all taken with the K10D and DA* 50-135mm 2.8. The main light was a Photoflex 1000 watt Starlite in a 3 foot Octodome soft box. The back light was provided by a gelled Pentax AF-540 flash bounced into an umbrella.

Having played with my Starlites before , I've found the output to be a little cool. Then, I read in the K10D's manual that the Tungsten setting is 2750K (per my fuzzy memory). So, I set the white balance to 3200K, to match the output of the continuous light source.

On the flash, I used a 3/4 CTO gel, which takes the color temperature from 5500K to 3200K.

I liked this technique, since the main light did not provide any of the usual blinkies associated with flash. And, though the light in the back did flash, it wasn't very direct and the subjects didn't usually blink.

Here are a few of tonight's experiments with Sofie and Chaya...

In group shots, I always choose one subject...

Here's one with a red gel on the AF-540...

The detail and brown of #2 are exceptional. Brown is one of those colors tough to get accurate I've found, often turning out too dark or the tone off. Well done with your lighting arrangement. The light you pointed me to a few weeks back is still on my list to get.

The browns are something usually only seen in her coat in direct sunlight. It keen how the lighting brings that out in her.
