Something you don't see every day
Posted By: gjtoth, 03-21-2013, 08:46 AM

This is a mated pair of Downy Woodpeckers. Male has the red spot. What's unusual is, they normally don't both feed at the same time. In fact, the male normally drives off the female! Spring is in the air.

"HEY! Come up for air, will ya?!"

"NEENER NEENER!!"

I've seen them a couple times together at our feeder, but like you said they usually they come in alone.

This pair usually comes in together but the female will wait above in the tree for the male to finish before she comes down. We have several downies that visit the feeder, along with several red-bellies.

They're cool little birds, aren't they? They sure don't like sunlight too much... always seem to want to stay hidden in the shade.

Thanks!

Great, and yes, never seen them together in the spring. We did have adults teaching youngsters to go to the feeders last year. That was fun...

Thanks for looking. I think I know where these guys have nested. I'm looking forward to seeing some learning experiences at the feeders.
