Suspended in Ice - Part Five
Posted By: tessfully, 03-24-2013, 06:09 AM

A few more from this series. I used a lasagna size container and I arranged some birch bark, beech leaves, a maple leaf and fern fronds in 3/4 well water and 1/4 carbonated water before freezing. I have been photographing this set for a week now trying to capture the special something I see in the ice. It is outside melting slowly so I will probably have one more go at it before it turns into a puddle.

Last night's purple and pink sunset provided the nicest light so I propped the ice block up on the picnic table facing the sunset and took a few shots.

I am only now starting to see corners of the Birch Bark, the bottom layer in the ice, which has a lot of burgundy in it.

And a couple I did the other day, back lit by a lamp, and converted to black and white and then sepia for effect...

Thank you for having a look!

Nicely done Tess - I see you really got into it .
Thanks mrNewt... yes, with grey days and wintery weather it is nice to have something creative to explore. I do want to try this with some new blooms, eventually.

I hate to be repetitive Tess, but damn you're good! I love 1&5. (I pictured the concept of setting it up with a thin glaze of water but wouldn't have thought of the Shweppes trick for the bubbles )
John
Thanks John. I actually did allow the top of the ice to melt a bit so there was a think glaze in many shots. The bubbly worked really nice. Now I am thinking about food colouring or freezing an ink droplet as it dissipates?

It has been lots of fun. Thanks to everyone for encouraging my experiments!

You mentioned "purple and pink sunset". Must have taken a bit of self-discipline to priorize which shot to take - the sunset or the 'art'.

Hey Jac, the thing about sunsets here is that our house is surrounded by big trees so we have to go to the lake for a better perspective. I always think if we lived on the lake how many thousands of photos we would have of sunsets. But, when it is dramatic enough we do rush over.
