A VERY old lens
Posted By: bymy141, 03-03-2008, 02:35 PM

In Lampang Thailand, we came across this old lens, it is a hole in a door.
It seems that the "lens" has been there for many, many years.
In the small and dark room behind the door (forbidden for women), they've put up a blanket.
On the blanket you can see the (inverted) image of the Wat (temple) outside.
A long time ago, this was considered some sort of a miracle.

The lens (it's the black spot / hole, below the center of the door):

The projected image in the room (and the real image, taken at 6 o'clock from the door):

I thought it was fun!

Quite interesting This is really like an ancient lens. Perhaps the first one in the world?

Yep, it's why we call cameras cameras. Latin for "room", I believe. Camera obscura = "dark room". (I think that's right, but close enough at any rate).

The principle of casting an image was known for a looooong time. What we had to wait for was somebody to come up with a way of capturing it in a (semi)permanent manner.

I think "camera" comes from cabinet. In Spanish, "camara."
