NHL Hockey- from the hole in the boards
Posted By: Tyler, 03-03-2008, 06:26 PM

Went to a season ticket holder appreciation party thing today and luckily was let down right up to the ice and got to shoot through the holes in the boards. I shot a ton, but here are a few I've gotten around to editing. K100D 70-200mm f2.8 ISO1600 run through slight NoiseNinja and resized for web with Pshizzy2 actions. I will say one thing though. The pentax AF just could not track these players very well. The shots I did get were super lucky. Most of them were OOF or focused on the boards behind the player.

let me know what you think,

cheers,
Tyler

Don't sell yourself short Tyler, you did very well with these examples. The nice thing about a practice like this is there's generally a little less "pace" than the actual NHL game. The fact you were able to shoot through the PRO photog's hole in the plexiglass in not to be underestimated. You can really get a lot more pop this way as compared to shooting from behind the glass itself.

If you've been reading any of the AF threads in the other folders (above), you know I share your thoughts in this regard. Still, good job and thanks for sharing.

Great shots and the photography looks like it was fun too. I have found it hard to get good color balance in hockey rinks; you did great. (I haven't used my K10D yet in a hockey shot so it might be easier in the raw mode then my older film camera.

I agree Tyler all shots are very well done in very difficult conditions (having taken a few snaps in the rink myself).

What's the matter, you guys don't support the team? Took me a moment to realize it was a practice. DUH!

Great shots!

Heck just getting the white balance right in an arena is a challenge, those are fine shots!

My experience (with kids hockey) is that I'm lucky if I get 1 in 20-30 shots good because of focus, DOF or wacky lighting issues.

I specially like the last shot where we can see his stick bending... nice action shot!

Very nice shots. If you call that sampling super lucky, then you must have horseshoes coming out your butt. Crisp, clear, and must have been at super high speeds. Thanks for sharing.
