The first is one of the first glimpses you get of the fort as you approach by sea. It is most famous for imprisoning Dr. Mudd after the assassination of President Lincoln. Most visitors come now to snorkel or lounge on the beach. Access is by boat or float plane.

Looks can be deceiving in this case. Lots of loose and falling bricks. Still an interesting place to visit.

I'll bet that was interesting to view and read of the history. I love those old canons with the ornate work on them. Beautiful water approaching the fort Susan.

I don't think those cannons were ever used Bob. I seem to recall that the fort was never used as a fort, just a prison.

It's the gulf Dave. I assume all God's ocean creatures are around. The boat to the island takes off from Key West so that should give you some idea of the terrain.

Some great architectural photos, Susan. I've always wanted to visit that place, but it's a long sail from Kemah, TX.

Thanks Cee Cee and Jer. Appreciate your having a look. My husband love forts and drags to me one every chance he gets. If this one hadn't been on an island I would have stayed home .
