Poor (and Lazy) Man's HDR
Posted By: Sailor, 03-05-2008, 08:57 PM

A few days ago I "upgraded" PSP X to PSPX2, which has a simple HDR converter (or whatever it's called). I haven't had time to do tripod mounted experiments with actual bracketing, so tonight I picked out an image taken some time ago and adjusted exposure up and down about a stop and, using the feature on the new program, merged these two with the original exposure (RAW image was adjusted and converted to JPEG in each case). The merged image was saved, cropped, reduced in size and sharpened. Here is the result:

Here is the original unadjusted, unmerged image sharpened identically (but uncropped):

I'm not sure whether simply adjusting contrast might not produce the same result - still, I liked the outcome. What do Ya'll think?

I like the contrast between the clouds and the little bit of blue sky peeking out. I am using PSP and am thinking about upgrading to the PSP X2 also.

There sure is a difference! I like the effect. Much more dramatic.

It looks good to me Jer, although the original does as well.

I hope that you have fun with the new program, and HDR's

The HDR version looks better than the original. This seems like a great converter.

Great image. The "HDR" one has a lot more impact. Good colours and contrast.

Huge difference Jer. Nice to be able to do this and it only takes a few minutes. I'e tried the same thing several times and like the results most of the time.

Hi,
I use HDR a fair amount but still cant decide whether its a slight 'cheat' or not. However until I learn to use my camera to its full potential in tough exposure situtations using filters and so on then HDr offers a great way of enhancing original images. I see that newer cameras now offer HDR as an option for in-camera processing so it seems this technique is becoming a normal and excepted part of digital photo PP.

Great picture that looks completely natural and if you hadnt of told us then I would never have guessed it was HDR

Dramatic difference - #2 is much better - well done and anything that can save time in PP is a good thing.

Thanks, all, for the thoughtful replies. We're expecting a cool, sunny weekend and I'm hoping to do the "real" HDR thing with K10D mounted on my tripod and properly bracketing.
