K5 - Union Station - Indianapolis
Lens: Pentax 12 - 24 Camera: k5 Photo Location: Indianapolis

Here are some shots from my k5 over the weekend of the inside of the old Union Station in Indianapolis. Tricky lighting but yielded some dramatic results in the end. In the ball room, I bracketed the shots and exposed for the window to keep it from blowing out and thought I would blend them together in PS but in the end I was pretty happy with what I could do in Lightroom to recover both the shadow and highlights on a single exposure. Interesting byproduct was a more saturated color pallet but think it works.

Nice shots. It's been a long while since I've been there. It's neat to imagine it filled with trains and travelers.

Station is now owned by the Crowne Plaza in Indianapolis. The main terminal was converted to the ball room. You thee are old train cars you can stay in inside the hotel too. Very cool.

Can you imagine building such elegant and beautiful buildings as stations nowadays. The arguments would no doubt be it's all down to cost, but these buildings would have also cost more than the standard back in their time and yet they still went ahead did it. Good for them, because it's left us with some gems.

Thanks for posting these great images.

Wayne,

I saw this 1906 photo of Union Station today on Shorpy, and couldn't help but add the link to your post. I wish there were some views of the inside during that era.
