Last fall a Ruffed Grouse staked out a territory right next to a trail at the nature center...

He stayed there all winter, he would come out and stand in the middle of the trail to stop the cross country skiers...

He's still there this spring. He comes out and walks with you to the end of his territory. He didn't like me very much...attacked my shoes several times.

When you get to the end of his territory he just turns around and walks into the woods...

Very cool, I saw one beside my driveway tonight driving back from the park. People around here shoot and eat them, so they usually avoid people as much as possible. Every now and then my dogs flush them on their walks.

I think if you are wearing something reddish, they will attack it in mating season. He doesn't want you stealing his sweetheart.

Real> As in an uncivilized beast attacking the photographer. That's what you like?

Amazing that you got so many good shots of such an elusive bird. The most I have seen is the shadow it leaves behind when it gets flushed out of the bushes. Nicely done and TFS.

What else you supposed to do with them?

Wrongly or rightly, it's a big revenue generator here in the Highlands of Scotland, many sporting estates would not survive without the glorious 12th.

Just look how well their camouflage works in the 5th image, you'd struggle to see them if they stood still, well seen and taken.

He's very habituated to people by now. Several hundred must walk past him daily, plus the joggers...

If this bird had been in a state wildlife management area instead of a nature center he wouldn't have lasted the fall...
