Ice Cold

Farmers are starting to water their crops, but with the cold mornings, it makes for some nice and interesting pictures.

That's well seen, great image, really like the low viewpoint.

Is that now the watering formed into a frost or ice, I wouldn't have that was to good for the crops.

Actually, watering crops is one long-used method of avoiding crop loss from below freezing temperatures. When water freezes, it gives off heat which is often enough to avoid cell damage in the plant foliage. And once the ice has formed, it acts as insulation so even if the ambient temperature continues to plummet, the foliage temperatures remains near the freezing point.

Now there's something I've learnt today, I'd have thought it would have worked almost the other way round by keeping the foliage colder longer.

Thanks for the heads up on that.

They say you learn something new each day, well I hope nothing else comes along, because I've already had my one for today now.

Thanks for all the comments. To show you how much ice there was, here is another picture with all of the ice build up on the sprinkler head.
