Calico Ghost Town
Lens: 15, 30, 90 Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Near Barstow CA

Calico Ghost Town is located 8 miles east of Barstow CA.

It was a silver mining town over 100 years ago.

Now it is a tourist attraction. This is the entrance from the lower parking lot.

Don't take any...

This is the real color...

Not so busy on a Friday. Mostly Japanese and German tourists today. Once or twice a year is a big Civil War weekend.

A 21st-century intrusion.

From the viewpoint.

Southerly.

Southwesterly.

Something like 5,400 bottles make this...

It used to be called the bottle house, at least informally. The sign is post-2007.

This was the housing for some miners.

An area of town was allocated to the Chinese residents.

The stamp mill crushed the silver ore, up to 100 tons in 24 hours.

This must be the warehouse.

Nice shots; make me want to go back. I love that place. Classic old-school tourist attraction. They really don't make 'em like that anymore.

You should go during the Civil War weekend. It's pretty active then :-)

If you are in the Las Vegas area, Calico/Barstow is about 2 hours SW. There's enough in the area to make it worthwhile, and a 2-movies per night drive-in still operating in N Barstow.

well you hit all of the hot spots there Kyle, great tour, I really enjoyed it. We lived in Victorville and visited Calico many times back in the day and they have done a great job of keeping it like it should be. Isn't that something how the miners built their homes right in the mountain where they had their claims. The mines started right at the back of the house, into the mountain and who knows which way the tunnels went. Thanks for the post, looks like you enjoyed your visit.
