Bunya Mountains, Australia
Posted By: PJ1, 05-07-2013, 05:10 AM

Spent last weekend at the Bunya Mountains – an isolated set of peaks here in southeast Queensland. It has remnant rainforest and views forever from the highspots. Australia has no really high mountains and the Bunyas are not the highest of those it has. They top out at about 1100 m (3500 feet) but they are still probably 700 m higher than the plains below. The mountains are named for the bunya pines which are the forest’s “signature” tree. They belong to the family Auracaria which dates back to the Jurassic. They grow to about 40 metres (130 feet) and every three years or so they have a bumper crop of nuts. These are contained in something like an overgrown pine cone weighing from 5 kg to 10 kg (11-22 pounds) (The actual nut segments are about 3-4 cm long (1 1/2 inches). You do not want one to fall on you from 100 feet! Aboriginal people from a large part of eastern Australia had a big feasting ceremony in the mountains in years when there were bumper crops.

I took the K-01 with Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC HSM The first four images are the rainforest, small waterfall, fungus and big tree ferns on a little rivulet (no PP, all resized to 15%). Images five and six are just to show the general area – bunya pines and a view across a “bald” looking to the north. The “balds” were areas maintained free of rainforest by the aboriginal people as part of their land management practices (the balds made good grazing areas for wallabies). The bunya nuts are a bit bland, but not bad eating when roasted or boiled.

A single malt on it's own is fine, it's probably the many single malts that don't help.

Completely confused.
My son (the real Sam-Joseph), had a Scottish soccer (football) coach when he was about 11. The kids would be running about the field with the coach bellowing instructions, and no-one had a clue what he was saying.
Hooroo.
