As a matter of fact...
The site was well known to locals as far north as Sydney Town since the 1800's when it was simply "The Blue Hole", a natural rock pool. In the 1930's the area was frequented by the American western author and Fisherman, Zane Grey after whom a local camping ground was named. The popularity of the site and the limited capacity of the natural pool (hole), as well as the patronage by a famous international celebrity led to a number of benefactors and grants funding the creation of a concrete tidal pool. The popularity of this project grew and additional funding from the NSW Government led to the construction of the concrete steps down the steep cliff face, as well as the change sheds at the top of the cliffs.
The site has been renovated several times over the decades and today boasts some of the best water-quality anywhere in the world. The location itself is the closest point on the Australian East Coast to the continental shelf, accounting for the popularity of the area for fishing.
