The Ford of Bruinen - Lord of the Rings
Posted By: selar, 03-09-2008, 05:17 PM

This is the river DART near Queenstown in New Zealand. Lord of the Rings Fans may recognize it as the Ford of Bruinen in the first Lord of the Rings movie where the Black Riders are swept away in a flood called by the Lady Arwen:

Thanks!

If you're a fan you've just got to visit NZ, even if you're not a fan, its one of the most fascinating countries to photograph.

More Lord of the Rings photos will follow.

I kept on postponing my trip to NZ since it is so close and cheap to travel to.

Your image tempted to visit the whole south island again to snatch up more landscape shots before the government wants to charge photographers fees to photograph

I hope you get weather like this when you get to Milford Sound, whenever you make up your mind to go to NZ.

Stunning landscapes. Huge fan of the movies and books. On my 'must visit' (bucketlist?) places.

I was wondering what the OP meant by Ford - I was expecting to see a car..

The images of the fjord are very nice however!

Ford as in shallow river crossing. In the movie, the good guys, (Frodo & Lady Arwen) cross the River Anduin to safety into elf country at the Ford of Bruinen, pursued by the bad guys, (Black riders). In actual life, the River is the River Dart and the place is called Paradise. You go to a place called Glenorchy near Queenstown and then ask for directions to Paradise. I thought the place leved up to its name!.

Yes, Milford Sound is actually a fjord.

That is Milford Sound, (should really be called a fjord), with Mitre Peak in the background. Its a very rare sight to see Mitre Peak, as its usually shrouded in clouds. You can drive to Milford sound from Queenstown in NZ.

Well I dunno about "very" rare, I've seen it quite a bit!. But it does have the highest rainfall in the country. But that's cool, as it's an amazing place when it's raining too, a million waterfalls spring from the rock faces. Really it doesn't matter what the weather's like when you go there, it's just like visiting a different place.

Hey if you want LOTR shots, I do live in Wellington and am available for a price! (And of course have done work for the upgrading of Peter Jackson's residence).

Here's some of my NZ South Island Pics from early last year. It's an awesome place and I'm looking forward to my next trip there.
