From the 'shores of Sherwood Park'
Lens: DA* 300 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Sherwood Park, Alberta ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/250s Aperture: F11

From their winter retreats on the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts from central California and Florida south to Panama, and along the Mississippi River at least as far north as St. Louis, Missouri , for some reason they come as far north as here (even a bit further) to breed. I always found it strange a group of them (I have seen as many as 20 , but there are 100's in the province) decide to spend part of they days in our wetlands smack in the middle of town. Initially I thought they all had GPS issues as we almost 1000 kilometers from any open water.

One of the world's largest birds, the American white pelican weighs 5-8 kg and has a wingspan up to 3 meters. I have rarely been in a position to get a good in fight shot , (too far away , or they are not there ) or when I was I just missed it. Hopefully this is the year

Like the first shot where they're all lined up, looks like a taxi queue.

Nicely shot. We have pelicans here and they do travel long distances away from the sea. Did you know a pelican's beak holds more than his belly can.

That first one's a contest winner, Dave. We rarely see white ones around here.

Thanks Susan - the real trick is to be there when they are (they are not there every day) and be there when they are flying ..... here's hoping .......
