Loch Vale -- RMNP
Posted By: Colorado CJ, 05-13-2013, 07:24 AM

I went snowshoeing yesterday up at Rocky Mountain National Park. Even though it is spring, the snow is still heavy above 9,000 ft. I was planning on snowshoeing up to Andrews Glacier, but it was an additional 2.5 mile round trip and the ~7 miles I snowshoed was enough (I'm feeling it today ).

I was planning on camping out in the park so I could get up to the Loch by mid morning. That plan didn't turn out though, so I didn't arrive to the Loch until around 2:00. Because of this, the sun was directly to the front of these shots as I was looking towards the west. The bright sun and even brighter snow made for not great photography, but you gotta make due with what you have.

Here are two of the processed photos I finished so far.

In this first photo, I am actually standing on top of a 30 foot high snow cornice, although you can't see it in the photo (darn light!).

Here's a shot with the 50mm f1.8

I have a few more to process and I'll add them here after I do so.

I'll be going back later in the spring to make the hike up to the glacier. I'll camp out up there so I can get to the glacier early in the morning.

Great images, you carry on with the snow shoeing business, I'll just stay here and look at the finished images for you.

We were up that way late summer CJ, what a difference the snow makes on the landscapes. Beautiful shots here.

Thanks. It wasn't cold though. I was sweating in just a t-shirt. I also should have wore sunscreen, the sun reflecting off all that snow burned me up pretty good

Yeah, these landscapes really change in the winter. Sometimes it is hard to find the trails as everything looks different with a few feet of snow covering everything .

Thanks Bob, glad you liked them.

I can feel and smell that fresh air. Nice image. I think if you had stopped down about 3 more stops, you wouldn't have lost as much detail in the snow. I find it's always easier to pull out shadow detail in PP.

Thanks. Yeah, I should have shot for a lower EV. I had the images shot at -.5 EV in manual, but should have went lower.

The lens I was using wasn't coated as well, so it has huge ghosting/flare issues with any bright areas. It is my widest lens for this camera right now though. I am saving up for a 16-28mm F2.8.

I will leave the snowshoeing to you CJ but am happy to go along photographically. We have been to Loch Vale in the spring and it definitely looks different dressed in snow. Beautiful country.

These are truly amazing, CJ. The color and crispness are terrific - super compositions. I keep coming back and looking again.

Snow adds a little something to these landscapes. Just wish I had better light. I'll definitely be heading back later this spring/early summer. I really want to get some shots of the glacier.

Thanks Jer, real glad you like them! These were shot with an old lens I found on ebay. It wasn't known for its quality but it does a decent job. most of the images had pretty good ghosting since the lens isn't coated, but I was able to somewhat correct for it.

I need to save up on a decent ultrawide zoom. They are BIG money though.
