Mojave Desert Mesquite Tree
Lens: 50mm Camera: K5 Photo Location: Pahrump, NV
Posted By: Bob Harris, 05-16-2013, 09:59 PM

Throughout the US and Canada spring is in the air and trees are in bloom. The Mojave Desert doesn't have a lot of trees that grow naturally, but one of the exceptions is the Mesquite Tree. The blossoms are as pretty as the cherry trees I think and this from a tree that gets a minor amount of precipitation each year. The winter provided ample water supply for this tree to go in full blossom here in the Pahrump Valley and it is much prettier than I can photograph to enjoy completely.

You know, I don't think I have ever seen the mesquite in bloom. Quite beautiful. Thanks Bob.

Nice shots Bob, but I wonder if this could be our "Desert Willow" rather than a mesquite?

Dave, not really a strong aroma as you would think. The reason you hadn't seen a mesquite in bloom like this is because as Jaytee pointed out, it is in fact a Desert Willow. I went back up and took a look and it doesn't have the spikes on it like a mesquite does or darker trunk. It was funny as I read about the Willow, is that it isn't a willow at all either. Thanks Jaytee for pointing this out, I enjoy learning every day and so does my wife. Bob

I wasn't sure as there are more than one type of Mesquite and more than one type of these "Willows" that as you say only look like Willows.
