ƒ2.8 or ƒ 16, you be the judge
Posted By: normhead, 05-17-2013, 03:15 PM

With all the stuff about narrow DoF, I just need to ask, which do you like better, ƒ2.8 or ƒ16. I'd run a poll but I can't remember how.

or

You be the judge.

Thanks for all the comments, I didn't take a photo at ƒ8, at ƒ 5.6 and ƒ 11 though....so I did a bit of pre-screening....I'm thinking for the 2.8 image, I have a 1.8- 50 and a 2.8-90, might have been time for a lens change to narrow the DoF even more on the first one. Hmmmm.... I wonder if htat snake is still there. But I quite like the second one, except for that leaf....it was so close to his face he was sure to move if I moved it... thanks for all the comments so far....

I like the f2.8 but agree about the background and the leaf. I hope you don't mind Normhead but a rough and ready crop and clone exercise gave this....

I'd go with the f16 and do some PP adding vignette and bokeh. I'd show you what I mean, but don't want to add an image without permission.

Hey, go crazy....it's good to get people thinking about what might be done with the image. Showing is even better what could be done, even better.

It's not really about aperture, this thread should be about focal length of lens and how far away can we get from the reptile.

btw the F16 works for me.

I too agree with the f16 version. The snake in focus with it's environment. I do however see merit in the crops and other subsequent treatment.

f2.8 works better for me. The f16 shot is too cluttered IMO.

Tough one Norm but I have to go with the 2.8. The leaf is a bit distracting but I like how the snake seems to rise out of the ground. Although the body of the snake is OOF this adds to the effect and you can still tell it is part of the snake and pick out enough detail to satisfy the viewer. He is really a beautiful creature and looks like he just shed his old skin; he has that shiny glow they get after that process.

I've enjoyed reading the different opinions Norm, interesting for sure. I'll take it at 16 for this old guy.

An interesting read for sure Bob.. I wonder if there's enough here for a Canada Council research grant. Seems like this info should be useful to someone somewhere. Maybe i can develop a whole personality test based on snake pictures.
