ƒ2.8 or ƒ 16, you be the judge

With all the stuff about narrow DoF, I just need to ask, which do you like better, ƒ2.8 or ƒ16. I'd run a poll but I can't remember how.

or

You be the judge.

Hmm, tough but I'll go f2.8

I think a shot at f4 might have been better than both - soft in the background but more of the snake in focus.

It's great at f2.8; rather ordinary at f16 (except snakes are almost never ordinary subjects).

Both are very nice, but I think I prefer the f/2.8.

My vote goes to the second one. I don't mind the OF background, I do however prefer the in focus snake . IMHO I think it works better for this shot . Nice snake shot by the way.

I prefer f16, the whole sinuous set of pattern in focus.

Both are good. I prefer f16 as currently composed.

That snake was an uncooperative model, posing with it's head almost behind the green leaf. In the f2.8 version I find the leaf more distracting than in the f16 one. The bokeh draws my attention away from snake towards leaf. Cropping away much of the top and right, shifting the leaf away from the center of the frame, might minimize the distraction. Or maybe slightly desaturate green. Those PP comments only apply to the f2.8 version.

What type of snake?

f16. I prefer the subject itself to be in focus.

Deep DOF for me, better with the whole snake in focus.

I prefer the f16 also in this particular shot. It shows more of the snake in focus and in it's environment. If it was a shot framed mainly on the head (and perhpas face on) then f2.8 would most likely to be the better option.

Both are nice but between the two, I probably prefer the f/16. I find the background in the f/2.8 to be a little bit distracting; my eye keeps getting drawn to it, searching for another snake maybe hidden there. With different background elements, and/or a different subject, I might feel different.

f/16 is better because the background is giving nasty bokeh at f/2.8.
