Ocotillo in Bloom
Posted By: Bob Harris, 05-21-2013, 06:15 PM

The Ocotillo is a plant that can be relied on to bloom annually, even without leafing in particularly dry areas. It is an inverted, funnel-shaped desert plant with several woody, spiny, whip-like, straight branches angling outward from the base and rising as high as 20 feet.
Ocotillo are leafless most of the year, except immediately after rain; the leaves then quickly wither after the soil dries out. These narrow, oval leaves are about 2 inches long, appearing in bunches above spines. Photos taken handheld looking upward to capture the bloom and then cropped.

That's cool, Bob - I've never seen a flower like this and the term, ocotillo, is new to me.

Jer, I bet you've seen them growing out in the desert as you have traveled. They look like clumps of sticks, sometimes as high as 20 feet, and often bare. When they get enough moisture they get a small green leaf on them.
