What is it?

Can anyone ID this flower? It grows on a tall slim stalk, almost 6 foot, flowers at the top.

This one's a stumper... where is it growing? In the woods, in a cultivated garden, etc

Looks like brickwork in the background, which suggests a garden... in which case, it might be a hybrid something rather than a wildflower.

Julie, it's growing in the corner of my front yard. Two years ago I scattered a small bag of wildflower seeds on a bare spot in that corner. I've identified most all that came up, except this one. It did not come up the first year like the other stuff did, this is the first time I've seen it. I was involved with the State Wildflower Program several years ago. The mix that I scattered was a hummingbird/butterfly mix, but I don't remember ever seeing this variety in the mix.

Thanks. A biennial, perhaps? Will have to keep searching... you'd think a distinctive flower like that would be easier to track down!

I don't know for sure if this is the same type of plant or not, but two years ago we had a similar plant and flowers pop up in our side flower bed. I looked it up online and finally found a name for it. It is called simply a "hurricane lily" and as I said, I'm not sure if this is the same or not but I just wanted to comment to see if I could help.

The ones we had were yellow though.

They are pretty bluestringer.

It looks a bit like something we used to call a Tiger Lilly. I can't be much more specific than that. I am afraid Nice shot of it anyway, beautifully detailed and crisp.

Nice image. Neither of the previous suggestions are correct, as the lilies mentioned have more petals. This imaged flower has only 5 petals. It must be rare, because it's not on any of the many flower sites I've checked. Be sure and save the seeds, they could be valuable

Thanks everyone. I forgot to mention the flowers are small, only about the size of a dime. The plant itself is tall and slim, and reminds me of a dog fennel plant.

Not a lily, as Den notes... lilies and related plants have 6 petals, these flowers only have 5. Of course there are many, many plants with the common name including "lily" which aren't lilies at all (and many totally unrelated with the same common name, cf. "spider lily").

It sure is a pretty thing, though... have to keep excavating for an ID!

So far, the only thing I've come up with that's even close is Standing Cypress (Ipomopsis rubra)

Well that looks close enough. Could be a variety of it as the petals are slightly different in shape. I'll go with that
