First tries at strobism
Posted By: benplaut, 03-13-2008, 01:46 AM

Got my SB-80 for pretty much free, popped in a few fresh Eneloops, taped negatives over the popup flash, and I'm all set!

(Thanks to my lightstand Dylan, who dutifully followed me around on a lazy school day, positioning and adjusting as needed )

Lightstand on the left, me on the right, and a friend all around (Also showing how little light comes through the negatives--less the 1/8 stop, by my calculations)

Maybe a bit of Dave Hill or light tonemapping would be nice on this one

This is where Audrey 2 began

That's a halo he's got. Right.

I haven't had this much fun with photos in a LONG time

Looks like a fun day - that first one is my favorite by far - great capture.

Ya know... I took that shot a dozen times and on the little 2.5" screen, couldn't see the fingerprints. Now, after the fact, it's bugging me.

Easy shot to replicate, though.

Negatives work really well--the exposed end tab is usually wide enough for one or two popup-sized strips, and two layers gives you less than 1/8stop contribution to an exposure from a foot away. Tested with an IR camera, it's pretty much transparent, too.
