Colorado High Country Spring Time
Photo Location: RMNP
Posted By: Colorado CJ, 06-09-2013, 06:34 PM

I took a ride up into the high country today for some photography and hiking. Spring is here at last. The grass is green, the wildflowers are blooming an the wildlife are feeling their oats.

Here are a couple of shots from today's hike. Taken with a 105mm F2.5 AI lens and a E-Series 28mm F2.8 lens.

Now that's what I call big country, just look at the hills in the background, great shots.

Lovely stuff.
Forgive my ignorance - elk? Not like the deer hereabouts, for sure. Is this a protected area, or perhaps a farm for this species?
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you everyone, glad you enjoyed them.

It is calving season now, so hopefully I'll be able to get a few shots of some new calves in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, these are cow elk (female elk). This was taken in Rocky Mountain National Park. They are protected within the park boundary, but the park is surrounded on all sides with national forest, which is open to hunting. The park does cull the herds on occasion within the park and you can sign up to get the meat if you want. There are really no predators for these elk anymore, only the occasional mountain lion or coyote pack so hunting and culling are important so they don't overpopulate.
