Perch Rock lighthouse near Liverpool, UK
Posted By: simonkit, 06-25-2013, 12:48 PM

After seeing a very promising weather forecast I set off for Perch Rock Lighthouse at New Brighton on the Wirral last night. As seems ever the case though the forecast forgot to mention the increasing cloud, fortunately I still managed to catch a few glimpses of sun and as a bonus the cloud actually added a little more drama to the sky.

Be interesting to know your favourite (if any) and why?

thanks

Simon

I like the second and last ones the best. The leading lines in those seem to draw me in much more so than the others.

I love the 4th one, the lines and the dark sky do it for me. I prefer the cooler tones of the 1st and last as a contrast to the orange sunset. It kind of makes it look like a battle between the darkness and the light.

I'm with Susan on this one -- #2 and #4. These two have compositional tension between the lighthouse and the channels through the weedy rocks. Also #2 has a nice glow to the greenery.

Really beautiful, that second one. I do like the black&white but I do prefer the lower angle shots (like the second one).

Number 1 & "Mono" for me.
Great shots...that lighthouse has a great "aura"...Do you know anything about its history..how old...does it still operate etc?
Cheers, Pickles.

I like number 1 in B&W - but my suggestion would be, that it needs more room at the top. The Lighthouse points up to... the edge of the picture. I'd definitely leave some more sky there next time.

They are all good, but the first is my favorite. Possibly a little more sky and a little less foreground might improve it further. It gives a good impression of the vastness of the ocean, and has a little mystery behind the breakwater on the left. It also has a nice feeling of the setting sun as a natural lighthouse. And the breakwater pointing to the sun is nice.

Number 2 I think the rocks are a little too dominating, and the channel leads the eye away from the lighthouse. Number 3 the foreground overpowers the lighthouse a little much, but might have been very nice had there been more light on the lighthouse itself. Number 4 I think the background shore detracts from the feel of the lighthouse and its connection with the open sea.
