Motorsport from the weekend - Went nuts with Trailing Sync.
Posted By: blwnhr, 03-17-2008, 04:24 AM

There are 12 images here so warning to those on slow connections.

Shot a 2-day event on the weekend. Based at a local drag strip, included drag racing, a burnout competition and show and shine.

K10D, Sigma 50-500, 1/640, f/8, ISO400. Top fuel dragster on it's way to a mid 5-second 1/4-mile. First pass at a regional track.

K10D, Sigma 18-125, 1/10, f/6.3, ISO400, Sigma EF-500 Super. I hate using flash at the drags, there is no feeling of movement. I've been using trailing curtain lately. Drag car launch, with someone elses flash firing right at the right time. Lens flare adds to the effect too I feel.

K10D, Sigma 18-125, 1/6, f/4, ISO800. Handheld. I really liked the lighting here.

K10D, Sigma 18-125, 1/13, f/7.1, ISO1600, Sigma EF-500 Super. Trailing curtain again with another photog's flash firing just after launch.

K10D, Sigma 50-500, 1/640, f/11, ISO100.

K10D, Sigma 50-500, 1/500, f/5.6, ISO200.

K10D, Sigma 18-125, 1/10, f/5, ISO400, Sigma EF-500 Super - trailing curtain.

K10D, Sigma 18-125, 1/10, f/5, ISO400, Sigma EF-500 Super - trailing curtain.

K10D, Sigma 50-500, 1/125, f/11, ISO100.

K10D, Sigma 50-500, 1/125, f/14, ISO100.

K10D, Sigma 50-500, 1/125, f/14, ISO100.

K10D, Sigma 18-125, 1/13, f/4, ISO400.

Love the shots, but I had no idea what a trailing curtain was, so I googled it and it led me to another post you made on here explaining what it was. That crazy google!

Well done blwnhr- you must have been close using that Sigma 18-125 use to have one - not a bad lens at all for the price. Lcoe the motion effect.

Yeah, give a good effect, I really like it. Will find out this week if the magazine editors feel the same way, hahaha.

Cheers Dave, bloody good for a kit lens. I'm still up-in-the-air about what direction my gear is headed which is why it hasn't been replaced. I was about 3m at most from the side of the track, glad I had my ear plugs in!

For the first shot I was under 2m from the edge of the track. The top-fuel car blew my cap off on it's way to a 5.36sec. 1/4!

Man, #7 - the yellow car blasting out of oblivion - is truly remarkable. Is that a flash? - I'm assuming so owing to the trailing curtain - a wonderful shot. I'd buy you a beer right now if I was there or you were here. Please post more stuff like this.

Ok I think we are all thinking the same right about now....... the flash is a much deeper entity than we have considered..... and Blwnhr has hit the ball out of the park. I hope some of these shots make it in the magazine as they are excellent.

Thankyou very much! It sure is flash. I was surprised that is was in focus when I reviewed. A car approaching at 60km/h with 1/10 shutter, I thought it'd be average but went for it anyhow.

April 5th I've got another round of the drags. I normally leave when it starts getting dark because I hate using flash there (in the traditional sense). I will be sure to stick around and get some more stuff like this.

I am humbled, thankyou. I wish I had have discovered this technique earlier, it is really dramatic and I like it.
