One of my favorite Pentax pictures to enter the July 8th 2013 contest for a Ricoh GR Digital camera.

This picture was taken in May of this year, when a cloudy complex of moisture from the North Pacific drifted over Central California, which dampened fire danger thanks to the high humidity. Of course this cool low would wander off and June fires would soon come.

Taken with a Pentax K-5 DSLR - Pentax K5 K-5 Digital SLR Camera Body, Black 14748
with the wonderful Pentax-DA 1:2.4 70mm Limited lens - Pentax SMCP-DA 70mm f/2.4 ED Lens Limited Edition -Black #21620 21620 (my lens does not have the "ED" designation)

The challenging thing about this picture was to get an image that represented what I saw in person. I was able to coax it out of the darkest image from a series of images using the exposure bracketing feature of the K-5, and only when I increased the number of bracketed images to 5 did the image with the perfect dynamic range get captured.

Thanks - you should have seen how awful all the others were! Mega-banding between the sun and surrounding sky. I had a suspicion the results would be ugly and added more bracketing.

So now I am really curious, care to share some of those "awful" attempts to get the awesome end-result?
