Hummingbird nest...the final update
Lens: DA*300 Camera: K-5IIs Photo Location: My yard in southwestern Ohio
Posted By: Bud, 07-06-2013, 10:07 AM

Ahhhhh...they grow up so fast.

My last nest post was on June 27 and the nestlings were just getting their pin feathers.

A lot can happen in 10 days...in hummingbird time

July 1st - the kids are growing up and the feathers are filling out.

July 2nd - The living quarters are getting a little tight for 2 growing youngsters...

And one decides that it may be time to test the new wing feathers....

I returned 3 hours later to find the mother feeding just one...

Which seemed to be just fine with him

July 3rd...it's amazing how much they can change in a day

Until, yesterday (July 5th), when he decided to give his wings a little workout...

And guess what?

They worked!

Attempting a soft landing... on a zinnia

And checking out the nectar content of salvia guaranitica...

And silene regia "Royal Catchfly"...

And lonicera sempervirens "Trumpet Honeysuckle" (Never take your eye off of those stinkbugs )

The nest experience was very cool...but, now the fun stuff begins

Thanks for looking!!!

What a great series and the photography was top-notch. Thanks so much for keeping an eye on the nest and allowing us to see these wonderful creatures become adults.

Thanks, Susan... I appreciate your comments! It's amazing to me that just minutes after leaving the nest, they're out feeding from blooms...fascinating little creatures

Thanks for this total series, nest building, relocation to today.

We don't have humming birds here, so it's been real interesting to be a part of it, even if it's just viewing these great images, thanks again.

No doubt it's essential to their survival that they start feeding immediately. Super series--congratulations!

Great photos. I've enjoyed all your photos of the nesting find. I took a lot of photos of a wren nest last summer and it is so much fun to watch them grow. It would be a challenge just to find a hummingbird nest, much less be able to take photos all through the process. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! What's really cool is that the kids and mom are still hanging around, chasing each other and exploring all the blooms in my yard

Thanks, and I'm happy to share. They're fascinating little birds with incredible tenacity and amazing aerial acrobatic skills. I've re-landscaped most of my yard with plants for hummingbirds and butterflies and it's nice when it pays off with photo opportunities like the hummingbird nest
