No Civil War photographer is more famous than Matthew Brady. However, there were MANY -- Alexander Gardner being the second most famous. They would typically arrive several days after a major engagement. Gardner was notorious for staging a scene. If there weren't enough bodies to his liking, he would go out to the field and drag them into the scene and pose them!! Brady rarely took the battlefield photos. He had his many "assistants" do it but he took the credit. His specialty was studio portraiture.
