Yes, this approach works well for me too, most of the time :-) I am going to try and get some high DOF shots with the new manual 50mm 1.7 I just got in the post (26 off ebay and in really good condition!) - I just took some shots of the bees in the garden, set it to closest focus and snapped away, rather impressed, though will take some time getting used to the DOF at 1.7 as the area of focus is so tiny.
