Good timing. I love the smell of rocket exhaust :-)

I was in a rocket club in 5th grade. At one event, a rocket from another group went mostly horizontal, then crashed. It ignited the dry brush which quickly spread as everyone ran over and tried to stomp it out and flail at it with jackets, etc. The firetrucks arrived as we were leaving. I don't think it did any real damage to the field (a former Navy airfield) but I believe that was the end of rockets there, at least for a long time.

Great shot - did you shoot in "burst" mode? (pardon the pun)

Thanks for all the comments.

@SpecialK - Luckily all of the launches went up in the air. I remember building rockets back in grade 11 or 12 physics class and we had one that also went crazy and bounced along the ground. Nothing caught fire but everyone went running.

@daacon - Not sure how high it went. This one was pretty big (over 30in long) and heavy and didn't go as high as we hoped. We never lost sight of this one. I think it was supposed to go as high as 750 ft, but we definitely didn't get that high.

@manishved - Yes I did use burst mode. The photo right before this one has just a tiny amount of flame and the one right after is just a cloud of smoke. We were also launching a little red rocket but the K10D burst mode wasn't fast enough to catch it. I get a series of photos of the red one sitting on the launchpad and then one with just smoke.
