Road Trip - Wyoming - Devils Tower
Camera: K5 Photo Location: Wyoming
Posted By: daacon, 08-09-2013, 05:46 PM

We left Deadwood and then headed to Wyoming for Devils Tower. It was a little over an hour away. As we appraoched it all I could think of was close encounters of the third kind - It was really cool to see such an iconic structure in person.

click on image twice for larger view

#1 - Took a little detour down a road that said scenic view and yep it was ....

#2 - Me and the Kid

#3 - Next two we get a little closer - actually same physical distance just a longer lens.

#4

#5 - Next two are from the main area (other side of the tower) If you click on this one to view the larger size you should be able to see someone climbig (in one of the slots) and someone a little higher up waiting for them - now that is impressive

#6

#7 - Me and the Kid

#8 little further down the trail

#9 - next three are from the road leaving the park ...

#10

#11

We are done with Wyoming and heading back to South Dakota ......

If it were painted red, it would be God's solo cup.

Impressive area. Those people in #4 are gutsy. I really hope they have ropes that just aren't visible in the picture... 'cuz otherwise...

That is one big rock in the middle of nowhere isn't it, I think it rises about 1300' from the base. You got some great photos, looks like you had a very pretty day, great color in all the photos.

Nicely shot Dave. I have been there and it is quite an amazing thing to see in person.

I have been there, too. Had an urge for mashed potatoes while at the thoughtfully-provided photo-op turnout.

Some great looks there Dave, I was there three years ago, what an interesting place and an odd terrain. We were there in June when it was the sacred month to the Plains Tribes, no climber\s were allowed on the Tower and there were "bundles" tied everywhere in the trees. I can see you make in Deadwood or Rapid City at a restaurant, playing with you mashed potatos and saying "this means something". Hope your head didn't get too sunburned!

These give me a greater idea of how big this is. Good shots, adds size that seemed to be missing in the movie. It could almost hear the music playing.

Great pictures - been awhile since we have been there - friends have a large ranch there. I have had the opportunity to fly low level over it in a helicopter and it has quite a bit of growth on top to include bushes and small trees.

Wonderful views of the tower - you really captured it well in what appears to be perfect weather. It might be fun to try a B&W conversion on one of these.
