First attempt to birds (Sigma 100-300mm F4)
Posted By: Duh_Vinci, 03-22-2008, 06:19 PM

Never had a chance to shoot birds, never owned a longer telephoto. So today was my fist time out with the new Sigma EX 100-300mm F4, and the first outing for the birds.

My God it requires some serious patience! Manual setting also helps to get accurate exposure, stalking? Yes, I guess that is needed too! I don't have enough guts or techniques developed to get closer to the birds, I really need to practice, but what a fun morning it was!

C&C most definitely welcome! All hand held on K10D (exif should be intact):

D

Hey Duh,

Saw that you were getting this lens in one of the other threads. Looks like you had a little fun around the house.

Very nice shots. Some quite well done and composed and it appears that you are off to a really outstanding start. Bird photography, whether at a feeder or in the wild is so much more difficult to do than one imagines.

As you might agree, it is a really outstanding lens and produces solid output.

Congrats all the way around.

Stephen

Great series D. Good colours and compositions. That lens gives great results. You managed to get pretty close to some of the birds. As I am finding it isn't easy with 300mm.

Very fine shots! Thank you so much for sharing these - I have not seen too many examples from this lens. I have been longing this lens myself for some time. Definitely a good lens and surely in good hands with you.

Excellent stuff and you did a great job of getting close with a 300. I really like the one with the iron flower pot holder and the other with the clay pot. But they are all very good and well composed/exposed. Nice lens and congrats on the purchase. Now time to add the 1.4 matched TC and see what you can get!!

Thank you all for the kind words, appreciate it indeed!

This lens is not as "popular" as 70-200 F2.8, but for well regarded for it's optical quality, and personally, I would have absolutely no reservations recommending this lens to anyone, probably best performer in this range for the money.

I really enjoyed spending last two mornings "chasing" the birds, I think it would become a habit on the weekends

Regards,
D
