Congrats - it's now and forever part of the Internet. Good first effort. Yes, 1/8 handheld is tough. Rule of thumb for 35 mm - 1/(focal length) is about as slow as you want to go handheld. I don't know of an equivalently simple rule for digital - it probably depends on the size of the sensor. However, I DO know that while 1/15 was no problem in my 20s, now that I'm in my 60's, 1/30 is. Of course, practice helps, and there ARE tricks to help stabilize yourself...and there's that gall-durn new-fangled digital thingy-do - built-in stabilization.
Thanks for sharing.

Your "category" had me looking for something weird looking and open this to find a beautiful flower. TFS.

Hint: next time change the category to "Nature" if it is a flower. Abstract is for manipulated photos that are objects manipulated and aren't beautiful flowers; well, unless you manipulate the flower to make it abstract.

Thanks for taking time to comment, guys...you know how it is, when the UPS man shows up, it's hard not to rip out the backdoor in search of anything that looks like a "picture." No doubt the results will be better once my tripod and head get here, though...

Glad to see your new camera and lens have arrived. There are some very fine colors here, as well as some good composition. Will look forward to seeing more of your work, especially "out on the trail," as your familiarity with the equipment progresses. Note that the DA 21 is capable of some very interesting perspectives on flowers in their habitats, because of its close focusing and deep DOF.

Mole, thanks...in about another week, there will be banks of jewelweed and snakeroot headed up toward Spence Field, so I've got to find out what all the buttons do, ASAP. (Although, I might be grumbling a little about adding a magnesium brick to my loadout by the time I get that high...)

A quick question, if you happen to still be monitoring this thread: what kind of CPL are you running on your DA21? From what I saw from your comments (and studying your Whitehouse Rocks thread) I'm assuming you do have one for that lens, but the feedback I've seen from other sources indicates that its unique lens hood might make things a bit fiddley for true backcountry field conditions. Any thoughts appreciated.
