Junior Rodeo

The Banning Stagecoach Days included a junior rodeo.

The dummy roping contest. This girl was kind of new at it.

This girl, however, was experienced (possibly the state champ) and it showed.

She did not just twirl and release the rope - she directed it with power and jerked it tight.

Calf roping. This was catch-and-release, not chasing it down and tying its legs together.

Slalom (probably not the right term).

Gearing up sequence.

Settling in.

OK, so I missed the launch. I got a couple great point-and-shoot images of the dirt and hooves. By the time I got the camera up they had gone to the left around the gate, and it was over in 3 seconds...

Another launch.

Sometimes the calf refuses to do its part. The boy just stepped off, and got a re-ride later.

Another launch.

The re-ride was not much better.

Another standstill.

Last ride...

Only a minor calf injury - to the boy, not the animal.

It would cost you $6 per adult. Kids are free (I think).

Not many northeastern rodeos, I suppose.

It was a very enjoyable day, especially the pee-wees.

I emailed your threads to my younger grandkids and the 10 year old girl wanted to know if I could buy her a horse so she could practice. I emailed her back no, but I would buy her a calf if her dad promised not to eat it.

Perhaps renting instead of buying . My sister did that over one summer at a local stable.
