SMC Pentax 50/1.2 first run
Lens: SMC Pentax 50/1.2 Camera: Sony NEX 7 Photo Location: Tokyo Aperture: F1.2
Posted By: revdocjim, 09-20-2013, 09:00 PM

I rescued this lens from a junk bin at the local store because it was covered with mold on several elements. I asked for help on the lens forum here, quickly received instructions for disassembly, pulled it apart and cleaned it up. All the mold came off but there is still some clouding. Anyway, I don't own any K mount cameras so I got an adapter for the NEX and took it for a walk this morning, shooting almost everything wide open. It has a nice feel!

Nice serie

You can have a better result with clean glass, use a very volatile alcohol base like ethanol to clean it well, without agressing the coating. You can do it

Not bad at all for a rescue.

If the mold was bad enough it might have etched the glass... but I kind of like the soft effect of it.

Thanks for the comments. I took a few shots stopped down and they looked plenty sharp with proper contrast so I don't think the fogging is affecting IQ too much. And my guess is that at f/1.2 this lens has an inherently soft look. I'd love to see other examples.

Love the softness and bokeh in all of these. Very appealing series. Congrats on rescuing this dreamy lens!

Great work with a "junk" lens. A little perseverance does wonders. I have a couple of Super Takumars that need some work. Just summoning up the courage to give it a go.
