fall foliage outing with K30 and Da35mm 2.4 Al
Lens: DA35mm 2.4 AL Camera: K30 Photo Location: Vaux Hall Park Brooklyn ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/4000s Aperture: F5

I needed to see what my 35mm can do with tall trees before I go out end of month for serious foliage shooting.
The attached two tree shots indicate, I think, that it can be useful, but I will also bring along my vintage FA28-105 f4-5.6 pz
lens to see how that works. I may also get up the nerve to bring DA50-200. My son will be with me so that will
give me some sense of security. All comments welcome and appreciated. Freddy
P.S. Iso's varied a bit and so did shutter speed and Apertures.

Saturate?

Hi Freddy,
The DA 35mm f/2.4 is a favorite of mine also, but checking the EXIF data shows that you're making some choices that are (IMO) reducing the overall image quality.
In the first one, the shutter speed is 1/250s and ISO 800. Why not try 1/125s and ISO 400? Better I.Q. and still hand-holdable shutter speed.
2nd, Shutter 1/5000s, f/5.0, ISO 800. I'd drop the SS 3 stops (1/2,500, 1/1,250, 1/750) and use the 3 stops this way; 1/750s, f'6.7, ISO 200.
3rd photo, f/5.0, 1/4000, ISO 1600. Unless you really need to freeze the wings, this SS could be dropped at least one stop, maybe two. This brings the ISO back to 800 or 400, respectively.
Bear in mind, I'm from the 'Lowest ISO possible' school, even with a camera that has good high-ISO performance. So I'd sacrifice shutter speed and/or /f/stop for I.Q., saturation, clarity and resolution, anytime. Even to the point of bringing a tripod along in broad daylight.
The overall composition and colors are good, but clarity and contrast could be better. Lower ISO and a polarizer (now we're getting into tripod territory!) would pop out all the colors and saturation.
And, you might want to bring a wider lens along, too.
JMO, YMMV,
Ron

Ron, thanks for the very useful info. I didn't realize that very high shutter speed can degrade IQ. I can easily control that and the K30 LCD screen. To me, IQ is everything, of course. I've been too ISO crazy.
This will help me a lot. Warmest regards, Freddy
P.S. The K30 is a great learning tool with the infor available and controllable on the LCD screen. Pretty soon I'll be getting the DA L 55-300 lens, which I think will open many options for me. I don't ever want to
stop learning.

Thanks for your reply, Charlie. I welcome any help I can get. I have learned everything I know from the forums. The new cameras bring new challenges but they also have many helpful features. Freddy

Shutter Speed/ISO

Hi Freddy, glad my suggestions are useful.
A fast shutter speed (by itself) doesn't degrade I.Q., it's the trade-off you have to make to get it.
The 'Exposure Triangle' is ISO, Shutter speed and F/stop. Change any one, and you must compensate by changing another to achieve the same exposure.
Let's say you find a beautiful scenic, colorful trees, great sky and clouds, everything's there for you to capture.
You half-press the shutter to compose and the meter tells you it's f/8.0, 1/500s and your ISO is 400. OK?
You know from using that lens that you're safe hand-holding that body/lens combo down to 1/125s. Take those two extra f/stop (from 1/500s to 1/125s. two full stops) and metally 'put them in your pocket'. Change the shutter speed to 1/125s. Your exposure is now two full stops too 'bright'. Overexposed.
F/8.0 is a good scenic f/stop for depth of field, but f/11.0 would be better. You would have a greater depth, subjects near and far all would be sharp. So, we trade one of our saved f/stops for changing from f/8.0 to f/11.
Still got another one in our pocket, right?
Better I.Q.? Lower ISO. Trade our last f/stop for changing ISO 400 to ISO 200.
New setting; f/11.0, 1/125s, ISO 200. Same exposure value as the original meter reading, but greater depth-of-field, lower ISO and still a hand-holdable shutter speed. I would still bracket 1/3 stop over and under, just to have a look (on my PC later) at the highlights and shadow detail, the LCD can only show just a hint of what's going on. The histogram helps too, but bracketing only takes seconds and gives you choices at home.
Good luck, enjoy the Fall colors and post some photos!
Ron
