Birthday Milky Way with birthday camera
Posted By: Tsuken, 10-14-2013, 03:42 AM

I got my first Pentax (K-30, with a Sigma 30 mm f/1.4) for my birthday recently. The night was clear, so I went outside to see how it did shooting the Milky Way. Bear in mind this was taken just outside my front gate, not with an actual dark sky, but I'm pretty happy with it. 8)

Wow for a first , second or 10th attempt that's a great shot. All I would suggest is a little crop to remove that power line and pole.

Thanks 8)

And thanks for the comment Daacon. My attitude to power lines has shifted over the last year, and I now often think they can provide worthwhile contrast or context.

In this case it just happened to be there (can't really see what's in-frame at night) but I'm finding that a shot of the Milky Way really does need something in the foreground, otherwise it's basically the same shot repeated.

That said, at first I was really annoyed the pole was there and the Milky Way too low for me to crop it out. It's grown on me though. Thanks again. ^_^

That's a great shot. I for one like the power pole and tree as it provides a reference and perspective.

Nice shot! I've heard so many good things about the 30 1.4! Good one of the galactic centre!
