Thurmond

Here are some images of the town of Thurmond. It is pretty much a ghost town now but was quite a thriving place in its heyday.

Great images. Really get a sense of the place...even if it is deserted. Thanks for sharing your travels and images!

Great shots slowpez, what are the property values like around there? I always wanted a train station/ summer home...

thought provoking series Susan, I like that speeding train photo. I wonder if this is due to the shut down of the coal industry or a town that just ran out of people.

Most definitely coal Bob. This is a big coal mining area. We took a tour of an old mine. Scary working conditions. Thurmond was a real boom town when the coal was being mined.

A nostalgic series. Reminds me a lot of a train trip across New Zealand's South Island we took several years ago.. Originaly the line was for coal mining but now mostly caters for tourism.

One of the benefits of being retired and having an RV to get around in.

Really nice, Susan. I like your inclusion of the moving train - the dynamic feel of the photo contrasts nicely with the static, abandoned look of the other pics.
