Nice catch
Lens: Smc Pentax DA* 60-250 f4 Camera: K-3 Photo Location: Cairns Trical Zoo
Posted By: AussieTrev, 11-17-2013, 10:36 PM

Had a little personal time at the Cairns Tropical Zoo. Unfortunately still no RAW for the K-3 so edited JPG. Sorry can't remember which bird it was, but a local raptor, eats on the wing not real big.

Not sure if it's a Kite. This shot I took with my D800E and 70-200 VRII is of an Australian Kite (AFAIK) and it's a different colour

Nice shot! That's a Black Shouldered Kite. As you say, it's quite different in appearance. There's a number of Kite species in Australia; the Brahminy Kite is another attractive one, then there's Black Kites and Square-Tailed Kites for example. The Whistling Kite is very common in Northern NSW and Queensland. It has a very distinctive call.

Cheers,
I only ever saw that bird twice over the native pine and was lucky enough to have my camera with me the 1st time. The OP shot seems to have a bird with a leg collar on it. Is it trained?

Today I saw a hawk being chased by a much smaller bird.. we get a lot of them around here.

My neighbour raises Cockatiels and, not long ago, two escaped to meet their end at the hands of an Australian Hobby:

Sorry for hogging the thread.

Thanks Bob. Not as sharp as I hoped but bird photography is not my strong point.
