Nautical HDR Experimentation
Posted By: Sailor, 04-03-2008, 05:28 PM

Here is a shot I took in '06 as we motored up the channel towards Kemah and the dock. I converted the RAW file to JPEG with EV 0, -2 and +2 and merged them in PSP X2. Here is the result - looks kind of funky. What do ya'll think?

i really like the sun emerging out of the clouds ... but the blue cloth over the railing seems kinda surreal or as it's sticking out

the blue rail is bit too much, and I'd like to see more darkness in those clouds covering the sun too.

I like the attempt Jer, the sky and clouds and sun came out pretty well. But like the others, the blue chaffing gear on the rail looks a bit strange. Almost as if it was glowing from within. Have you tried to convert it to B&W? Maybe that would get rid of the 'electric blue'.

I concur Jer - I like the look of the sky - the railing almost looks fluorescent.

Now there's a yacht shot with a difference! Nicely done. I'd like to see the saturation on the blue chaffing gear turned down in PP (turned down a lot) but otherwise I really like it, a great effort with a pleasing result.

I like it. AND I think the glow on the blue railing actually adds interest to the shot. But don't listen to me. I rarely like what everyone else does. ;-)

The sun and clouds..

You got the clouds and the sun spot on, with this one Jer..

I dont mind the blue railing because i didnt even notice it until I read the other comments.. lol.. I was to entranced with the the upper part of the picture...

I was going to recommend maybe just cropping the boat and most of the water out and just leaving the sun and clouds..

Nice HDR.. Thanks for sharin.. Kim

I do like this shot for it's surreal effect though.

Yeah the blue could be toned down a bit ... but It'd be interesting to see this done on canvas as well.

I do like Kim's idea od cropping out the yacht and some of the bridge in the background ... and just using the sun and clouds.

Thanks for the great comments, everyone. I think I'm going to enjoy using the HDR tool occasionally - although, I may have been a bit heavy handed with this one.

I think I'll try cropping, but . . . . . it's asking alot for a sailor to completely crop his boat out of a picture.

I like the shot very much, the blue is a little bright, may try 1 EV in either direction.
