This one has bugged me for what seems like years - there is simply no light in this area and the distant trees always burn out. Maybe this is the best I'm going to get...

Here in Arizona, a mandatory car accessory, the sun shade, works great as an impromtu reflector. Granted you're in England so chances are you don't have or need one but maybe a fill reflector could balance the exposure a little so you don't lose the background.

Yes, that would work if there was any actual light to reflect, but in this case the monument is always in deep shade due to heavy evergreen trees behind me. Supplementary lighting like flash wouldn't cover the 8mm FOV, but might work if I bounced it off something diffuse. I'll give it a spin!
