While walking towards the beach to attempt to catch orca whales passing by, I spotted this Red-breasted Sapsucker working away in a tree. I hadn't seen one of these as close in over a year, and fortunately I was equipped. It was pretty dim within the tree (it's pretty dim everywhere most of the time here this time of year) so I ended up using the on-camera flash for the first shot. To see bright splashes of red in nature is always a treat.

It's nice to get a rear view of birds, especially one as lovely as this one. And it obliged by pulling an owl-like head turn. No flash on this one. ISO 3200, 300mm, f6.7, 1/60.
