Old stuff at the dog park
Lens: Zeiss Sonnar 135 f/3.5, Industar-50 Camera: SD1 Merrill Photo Location: Tempe ISO: 100 Aperture: F3.5

While going through some of my dog park pictures from earlier this year, I was reminded of two lenses that have been sadly neglected recently. My old pictures demanded that I give them another chance, so I took them to the park on Saturday.

The first is the Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135mm f/3.5. It's a simple 4-element lens, nothing special, kind of ugly (IMO), a little beat-up, but I really love the way it renders. I usually get weird colors when I use old lenses with this camera, so I tried a custom WB in-camera with a white tissue over the lens. It kind of worked. They pictures wound up looking a lot like film. Expired film, maybe.

I have the Zebra version. According to the serial, it was made between 1967 and 1970. If you want one, they're pretty cheap. You just can't have mine.

The other lens is an Industar-50. Mine was made in 1959. For those of you not familiar with this lens, it's best described with a picture:

It looks even more absurd on the Sigma camera I was using. I think most people overlook this lens because it's only f/3.5, but they're only $15! How could you resist?

It's a good conversation starter. This guy (the man, not the dog) thought it was a Lensbaby or, horror of horrors, a Holga. It's too bad he shoots Nikon; it's the only brand that can't use M42 lenses without a glassed adapter.

I just love your doggie shots. I kind of like the way Zeiss looks. Different.

I've never seen a lens that doesn't cover the Exposure contacts before. A first for everything.

That tongue sticking out really makes it for me.

The Helios 44 is even worse - it doesn't even cover those slots in the M42 adapter. It's the main reason I don't use those lenses much. I need to pile up a few rubber bands there to seal the holes.
