Sill Branch Full
Lens: FA 28, DA 21, DA 70 Camera: K 20D Photo Location: East Tennessee

Recently had a few spare moments to check on the water levels up at Sill Branch. This stream, flowing out of Sampson Mountain Wilderness in nearby Unicoi County TN, is usually nearly dry by late autumn. But we've had a wetter than usual fall season, so Sill Branch held some pretty good flow.

Plenty of sandstone ridges make for plenty of pretty riffles along the way.

And a number of small waterfalls as well.

The main falls is about 40 feet high. At times of low water, it's just a tall drip. But it was flowing pretty well this time.

Here's a shot of a little detail in the midst of the falls.

Not enough time on this trip to visit the smaller, more remote upper falls. But hope you enjoyed the quick hike to the lower falls, and that you'll share some comments, critique, and suggestions.

Critique? Are you kidding? Only critique here is that there aren't more of these amazing images. You are blessed to have this beauty around you, and I'm profoundly grateful at your generosity in sharing it!

What Susan said. I've come back to it several times. Maybe the lacy effect of the little rivulets in the 'midst' of the main flow.

Great set, though it's the third in the series that really catches my eye--maybe because I just know there's a brook trout in that little plunge-pool.

Bob - Thanks! I took quite some time (too long - just ask my puppies) trying out various angles on the detail shot. Glad you enjoyed it.

Jac - Thanks so much!

Dave - I am indeed blessed to live in such a lush region. Hope you can visit sometime!

Julie - You are too kind!

Susan - It's a rather easy hike out to these lower falls - only about a mile from the trailhead. Perhaps someday you'll be able to come and stare at the (much better looking than my photos) falls to your heart's content!

Southlander - Thanks so much!

Larry - Thank you!

CreationBear - Sill Branch is a good trout stream, but Rocky Fork is a GREAT trout stream!

Charlie - Thanks for your kind words!

Heinrich - Indeed the "magic" of a rich natural place...
