During my daily beach walk on this New Year's day, I had the pleasure of helping to launch these little fellas on their ocean odyssey.

Beautiful little turtle that if lucky will eventually be a very large turtle.

One of the biggest problems for them here is vehicle tracks on the beach, they get stuck in the depressions and baked by the sun. With the gauntlet that they face on land and sea, it's amazing that any of them survive, but their numbers seem to be increasing.

This is one of my bucket list things to do, how many of these chaps were there, as I understood they all kinda hatch at the same time.

Great shots and thanks for posting, you realise that you are now held solely responsible for moving this task further up my bucket list of standing orders.

There was about 15-20 trying to make their way, I found a couple that were stranded in tire depressions on the beach, the rest kept getting tossed back up by the rather large surf, so I would pick them up until a lull, and redeposit them nearer to the water. Today, I found five little pooped out stragglers and helped them get on their way. There is a conservation program here that digs up nests and relocates them to fenced areas where they can monitor and protect them from predation and they encourage people to come and participate in the releases. The group has been responsible for raising local awareness and greatly increasing the survival rate for a species that was traditionally exploited for it's eggs and it's meat. Up until the 70's, there was a cannery here that processed sea turtles and they almost disappeared, today, the species is protected and making a comeback.
