Another quick waterfall hike - this time to Jones Falls. It's right off the Appalachian Trail near Buck Mountain in Carter County Tennessee. In fact, the Trail was re-routed several years ago so that hikers could enjoy this waterfall.

From the parking lot at Buck Mountain Baptist Church, it's only about a 2 mile hike on gently rolling terrain to reach the falls. Much of the trail goes through typical East Tennessee woodlands, and an amazingly diverse spring wildflower habitat.

No spring wildflowers on this end of December hike, but we did spot some unique fungi. They're called "Puffballs in Aspic," or "Hot Lips Mushroom." They seem to thrive under Oaks especially, but are not very common (in our region) anywhere...

Part of the trail goes through some old, overgrown Christmas Tree farms. There are many active Christmas Tree farms in this corner of the state, but apparently, this one did not make it...

We could hear the falls quite some time before we got there. Never a high-flow waterfall, but thanks to plenty of rain, there was good flow this time.

Could not find a safe spot from which to photograph the entire falls, but there is a little path that leads up to the upper section. Here are a few views from up there.

Return hike was quick and uneventful. Had to put the camera away to be sure we'd get back before dark! Hope you enjoyed the trip, and that it will tempt you out to explore here, or near you. Thanks for any comments & critique!

All fine shots and that second last one is a cracker, quite different from what I've seen before.

Another great set--the fourth in the series is my favorite, especially with the birch in the foreground. I'm assuming you're running just a CPL only and not a ND filter to slow the shutter speed? With a cloudy sky and our canopy overhead, I'm having a hard time thinking of many scenes that would call for a big stack of glass...

Dave - Thanks! Was trying (unsuccessfully) to get a photo of the "hot lips" while "puffing out" their spores - even more bizarre than the closed "lips."

Jacquot - Thanks so much!

Steve - It is indeed a geologically unique waterfall. Will try for a less icy day to get down lower and more central to get a better wide shot.

Tess - Glad you enjoyed these!

CreationBear - You are correct - I only use polarizer. ND does not cut out glare. And stacking both seems to cause too much flare and softness...
